The following passages are compositions consisting of a (hopefully) brief anecdote interwoven with my learning from the experience. What started as a purely self-reflective exercise has transformed into a more formal documentation with the intent of sharing my own learnings in the hope that they may be of some value to others.
What is most interesting to me as I conduct this exercise is the old saying, “do as I say, not as I do,” which I feel is an appropriate disclaimer to the passages to follow. I will be the first to admit that I struggle to follow my own advice. It is such a strange, but very real phenomenon that I am confident All have experienced: knowing the right path, but not being able to follow it. It is the parents that tell their teenage offspring about the dangers of drinking and driving, but test their own limits when debating who has had less to drink and will carry the burden of driving home after their friend’s dinner party. On countless occasions I can see the path I should be taking - not losing my temper and raising my voice or being patient with a child - but am helpless to follow it. My attempted reconciliation is the reflection and acknowledgement that the behavior was wrong after the fact.
I hope that the reader finds some shred of comfort knowing that we all share this struggle. I am documenting and sharing my own learnings through self-reflection, so that myself and others may better understand the right path as it is more clear in hindsight and not stumble down the wrong path more than is necessary. Again, the ironic, simple, yet beautiful truth is that we all continue to stumble down this wrong path, but an awareness of a wrong path shines light on the right path. I hope that the reader finds some shred of comfort knowing that we all share this struggle.
